Home-Cooked Meals Get Costlier: Onion, Oil & LPG Push Up Kitchen Costs

Your home-cooked meal is getting more expensive. Crisil Intelligence data shows the cost of a vegetarian thali rose 1% year-on-year in August, while a non-vegetarian thali became 5% costlier. Onion prices jumped 43%, edible oil rose 11% and LPG prices increased 10%. For non-vegetarian meals, higher broiler prices added further pressure. There is some relief, with potato prices down 12% and tomato prices falling 28% from a year ago. But the outlook remains mixed. Crisil expects onion and edible oil prices to stay firm in the coming months. Meanwhile, the government is selling buffer onions at ₹35 per kg in select cities to ease prices.
