Will India’s GDP Numbers Change? MOSPI Secretary Explains Base-Year Revision

Will India’s GDP numbers change with the next base-year revision? At the Pathways to Viksit Bharat Conclave, MoSPI Secretary Saurabh Garg explained why India periodically updates its GDP measurement framework to reflect structural changes in the economy. He highlighted how the expanding digital economy, new products and services, and data sources such as GST, e-Vahan and the Public Financial Management System can improve estimates of economic activity. Garg noted that revisions can push estimated GDP higher or lower, depending on improved data coverage and methodology. India is also working to strengthen validation mechanisms and align national accounting with the international System of National Accounts. The discussion included areas being examined for possible incorporation by 2029 - 30. What could this mean for India’s growth numbers?
